10 Effective Ways To Cheer-Up Anyone + 10 Phrases To Say To Anyone in Distress

There are moments when we just aren't feeling our best and could use a pep talk. There are other moments when we're tasked with the opportunity to uplift someone else. In case you find yourself in any of these situations, here are 10 efficient ways to cheer up just about anyone.

No. 1

You'll find that your friend or family just needs to process what's upsetting them. Reassure him or her that its a safe space to talk. Try doing this without asking too many questions.

No. 2

Just listen. Actively listen, never assume anything, and don't judge their emotions or the situation. You might interpret the circumstance in a way that soothes you, however their reality isn't always what we perceive. Remember that in that moment, the person isn't looking for advice, they simply need to express their thoughts!
Actively listen by gesturing. You might seldomly repeat what they’ve just said for clarifying, but most importantly just listen.

No. 3

Offer to help. Offer to lighten their stress by running an errand or giving any resources they may need.

No. 4

Reassure them that you hear and understand what they've shared. You do this by reconfirming what you've heard.

No. 5

Send them uplifting words of wisdom and or uplifting images. Refrain from appearing Godly or like a know it all.  A vulnerable person doesn't need to be looked down upon or lectured.

No. 6

Love Bomb Them! Send them flowers, gourmet food delivery, home cooked meals, candy delivery, or personally gift them with something that they've expressed interest in.

 No. 7

If this communication occurs via text messages or email, just pick up the phone and allow the person to share their thoughts via a voice call instead of texting. Purging their emotions vocally will give them the chance to fully and thoroughly get rid of negative thoughts.

No. 8

Find a way to remove them from their environment. A change of scenery usually helps to find clarity and pivot from autopilot mode. More than likely he or she will solve his or her own problems with a clear head. The best way to realign thoughts is to change a routine and or environment.

No. 9

Help your friend or family to further tap into their emotions. You do this by guiding them and controlling the conversation. This is the only moment when asking a question is appropriate. You ask them how xyz made/makes them feel. Taping into deep rooted feelings will highlight the root problem, allowing for the opportunity to know what to solve.

No. 10

After you've listened and calmed them down by taping into the root cause and removing them from their environment. Gently refer them to a therapist. If possible, take it a step further by paying for a session or a few, or offer to drive them to their first session.
